The American Academy of Pediatrics, in 1992, went on to recommend that children should sleep on their backs, instead of on their stomachs as was being done. This recommendation was made since there were many children who died of sudden death. And as it was shown, sleeping on the stomach is dangerous for babies, and deaths were greatly reduced.
What happened then is that when the baby spent many hours on his back they began to produce deformities in the head, known as plagiocephaly.
What is plagiocephaly?
Plagiocephaly is a cranial deformation caused by prolonged external pressure on the head.
Babies have a malleable skull in their first months of life, so if they remain in the same position with their head supported, it can cause malformations.
Although it is mostly an aesthetic problem (a flattening of one side of the baby's head is seen with the naked eye), it should be treated by your doctor, in case it could be some other type of condition (mobility of the neck, damage to the hearing or the view,...).
Causes of plagiocephaly:
- Prenatal: Because the fetus has little space in the uterus during pregnancy (large fetuses, multiple pregnancies, ...)
- Perinatal: Due to the use of a suction cup during delivery.
- Postnatal: For bad posture, for example the head tilted to one side at bedtime, over a long period of time.
How to prevent plagiocephaly:
- The baby should sleep with his head on one side, and change his side.
- Take the baby in your arms, and thus rest from having your head supported all the time.
- Use of backpacks to walk with the baby, and always avoid the stroller to rest his head.
- Use of pillows for babies, they help to maintain a better position for their head.
In our store, you can find 2 types of baby pillows that we recommend.
Reference 650100 is a positioning and preventive pillow, which due to its shape allows lateralization on both sides to release pressure.
Reference 650110 is a preventive pillow contributing to a correct and comfortable baby posture.
We have both pillows in 3 sizes, 0-3 months, 3-10 months and 10-20 months.
